The Chinese invented umbrellas over 2,000 years ago to protect themselves from the sun
|
 |
The first umbrellas were likely made out of silk, and later paper took over as the less expensive popular alternative. The Chinese later found a way to apply lacquer and wax to umbrellas so that they could be used in the rain. Most umbrellas were made with either bamboo or wooden handles. Royal persons would carry red or yellow umbrellas and commoners blue ones. Umbrellas soon developed into fashion and cultural statements, which they are now in different ways around the world. |
