A man nails an iron horseshoe into the hoof of a Chinese work horse.

Horses have played a major role in Chinese history. Horses were critical to military strength and Chinese rulers went to great lengths to exchange silk for fine horses from Central Asia. Groups who had horses were usually winners in military campaigns.
