The Chien Men Gate, also called Town Gate, was the main entrance to the city
|

The magnificent Town Gate was burnt to ashes during the Boxer Rebellion (November 2, 1899-September 7, 1901). Though the Chinese fire brigade and military personnel tried to save it, the Burmese teak out of which this gate was constructed burnt furiously and nothing could be salvaged. The Boxer Rebellion also destroyed more than 4000 shops selling jewelery, silk, fans, fur, lanterns and curios, thereby causing unparalleled harm to the richest trading district of Beijing. |
