Dragon Wall, Winter Palace, Peking

Located in imperial gardens dating back over 1,000 years, this oft-photographed wall was built during the Liao Dynasty.

The Winter Palace is west of the northern gate of Beijing's Forbidden City. It is the most well-known of three similar 9 dragon walls in China. This Hartungs Photo Shop image was likely made in the 1930s, when there apparently were more trees behind the wall.
