As coal was frequently piled at the foot of this hill, this hill became known as Coal Hill
In 1420, Coal Hill was built using earth dug during the expansion of the nearby Beihai lakes and moat. The principles of Feng Shui were used for constructing this hill. The objective of this hill was to act as a protective shield for the imperial palace, protecting the royal family from the fierce and ceaseless northern winds that descend on Beijing. Since this hill was built on land that was earlier the site of a Yuan Dynasty palace, its construction also reflected the downfall of that Dynasty.
S. Yamamoto was a Japanese photographer who apparently worked in Beijing. |
