A potent symbol of auspicious power in Chinese folklore and art, the dragon embodies the concept of yang. It is thought to rule moving bodies of water.
The dragon is also a symbol of identity for those who consider themselves to be "Descendants of the Dragon." Because of its warlike and imperial connotations however, it is not promoted as a national symbol by the Chinese state today. This image is from a French postcard.  |
