The city gates of Beijing were built to serve a variety of purposes. The modern city, laid out during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), comprised the Imperial City, the Forbidden City, the Inner City and the Outer City. The city gates served both to protext the city's inhabitants and control trade. |
