Thailand (formerly the Kingdom of Siam) is a country in Southeast Asia on the Gulf of Thailand (formerly the Gulf of Siam), off the South China Sea. Beginning in the 13th century, the Kingdom of Siam -under various royal entities -- came into repeated conflict with Burma and Cambodia.
Siam was a monarchy until 1932, when the king had to accept a constitution. It was renamed Thailand in 1939. Occupied by the Japanese during World War II, Thailand was controlled by a succession of military governments after the war. The capital is Bangkok, which is also its largest city. |
