Taiwan (or Formosa) is in the Republic of China.
|
 |
Taiwan (or Formosa) is an island off the coast of the People's Republic of China (PRC) but the term also refers to the state-governed territories known as the Republic of China (ROC).
Mainstream culture in Taiwan is derived from traditional Chinese roots but with significant Japanese and American influences, especially in politics and architecture. The melding of traditional Chinese, modern Asian and Western influences are apparent in the fine arts, folk traditions and popular culture.
Following the retreat to Taiwan, steps were taken by the Nationalists to preserve traditional Chinese culture and suppress the local Taiwanese culture. The government instituted a program to promote the age-old arts of Chinese calligraphy, traditional Chinese painting, folk art and Chinese opera. But Taiwan's cultural identity has been allowed greater freedom following the Taiwan Localization Movement of the 1990s.
Distinctly separate traditions in areas such as cuisine, opera, and music have evolved due to 100 years of political separation from Mainland China -50 of which were under Japanese colonial rule -along with the pursuit of "Identity politics," which are political activities which attempt to advance the interests of particular groups in society.
