Tiblisi, the largest city and capital of Georgia, is located on the banks of river Mtkvari (Kura)
According to legends, Georgia's King Vakhtang I Gorgasali went hunting one day with a falcon. During the hunt, a peasant allegedly got injured by the bird and both fell into a nearby hot spring. Due to the burns received from the hot water, both died. King Vakhtang became very impressed with the hot springs and decided to cut down the forests of Tiblisi and construct a city at the site. The name Tiblisi owes its origin to the Old Georgian word "Tpili", that refers to "warm". The name Tiblisi ("warm location") was given to the city as the area has several sulfuric hot springs that erupt from the ground.
