Damascus, the capital of Syria, is among the oldest inhabited cities in the world
|
 |
Between the years 1029 to 1041, it is believed that the city layout of Damascus changed from Graeco-Roman fashion to a more familiar Islamic style. The network of straight streets gave way to narrow streets. Most of the residents lived inside enclosed areas called harat. At night, these were closed off by heavy wooden gates to protect the residents against the exactions of the military troops and criminals. |
