The Procession of the Holy Relic of the Tooth, Ceylon (the Kandy Perahera)
This annual summer festival is one of the most important in Sri Lanka
The Holy Tooth (or the Dalada) is one of the most venerated objects among Buddhists. After Ceylon became a British colony, Kandy was demoted as capital but became a popular resort town of the new rulers due to its location at 500 meters above sea level and the presence of the Buddha's tooth relic.
The festival itself draws villagers from all over the country, and a large number of tourists. For farmers, the annual parade of the Buddha's tooth is an occasion to pray for rains. For tourists it is a spectacle of dancing and other exhibitions by folk artisans from all over the area.
