The Mosque of Samarra was built of bricks and clay. This mosque has a rectangular plan that measures 240 x 160 meters. A total of 44 towers support this mosque. The walls of the Mosque of Samarra are 10 meters in height and 2.65 meters in thickness. An arcade surrounds the courtyard on all the sides. A large part of this courtyard faces Mecca. The famous spiral minaret of the Mosque of Samarra, the "Malwiya Tower", stands tall at 52 meters. This snail shaped tower is located at a distance of 27 meters from the northern part of the Mosque of Samarra. |
