The ancient name of Petra was "Rekem". This place was like a fortress as huge rocks surrounded it and a perennial stream supplied water to residents. Petra also played a significant commercial role as it controlled the major trade routes passing through it to Aqaba (Jordan), Damascus and Bosra (Syria), Gaza and the Persian Gulf.
On 6 December, 1985, Petra was listed as a World Heritage Site. This place is famous for its magnificent buildings carved out of natural rock. |
