The Kaaba owes its name to an Arabic word "muka'ab" that refers to a room whose shape resembles that of a cube

[Original caption] ARABIA. Mecca lies in a narrow valley 70 miles from Jeddah. Its Great Mosque, heart of Islam, is here seen with the Kaaba and the sacred well in which Moslems dig strips of linen to be used as burial shrouds. [end]
Prophet Abraham built the Kaaba with the objective of worshiping God. The Kaaba is built of granite and stands on a base made of marble that measures 25 centimeters. This base has an outward projection of almost 30 centimeters. During Hajj, Muslims walk around the Kaaba and face towards it while they offer their prayers (salat). |
