Mashhad, Mashad or Meched means the "Place of Burial of a Martyr," and it is so-named for the Holy Shrine of Imam Reza, the Eighth Shiite Saint. Located in the valley of the Kashaf River, Meshed is visited by more than 100,000 pilgrims each year.
Meshed has a population of over 2 million, an airport and is linked by rail with Tehran. As a rich agricultural region, it is the center of the northern wool trade, manufacturing carpets for export. Tourism is also important to the economy, as over 12 million visit tourists visit each year. |
