The sixth Umayyad Caliph al-Walid I built the Great Mosque at Damascus
[Translation] Scene of Damascus - Courtyard of the Great Mosque [end]
Built at the beginning of the 8th century AC, the Umayyad Mosque is significant to many religions. St. John the Baptist's head is said to be buried here, as is the head of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammad. Each of these relics is held within a mosque shrine. Saladin the Great is also buried in a courtyard of what is still one of the largest mosques in the world.
